It all started back in the late 1970’s. With founder Norm Cobb’s first visit to a Moto Cross race in the hills of Pukekohe.
The distinct smell of Castrol R Racing oil, the scream of highly tuned 2 stoke engines and the high flying riders left a lasting impression.
It did not take long for Brothers John and Norm Cobb to purchase their first Moto Cross bike – a 1976 Suzuki RM 125 S.
Many bikes and races later and Norm’s passion for racing and increased knowledge lead him to training as a mechanic at Colemans Suzuki in Auckland’s K Road under the tutorage of renown tuner and Moto Cross racer Alan Franklin. Norm quickly progressed up the local Moto Cross ranks and was the guy to beat at the “Dome Valley”.
Norm’s aspirations of tuning Pro were dashed by successive leg injuries but the love of the sport never diminished. Honing his skills as a tuner while continuing to race at local level. His tuning skills were instrumental in NZ Championship wins for some of the most recognised names in NZ Moto Cross – the likes of Darryll King and Kayne Lamont to name just two.
Finishing up with Moto Cross in 2014 but still looking for that adrenaline rush lead to the world of Mtb’s and the forests of Woodhill. There Norm and son Daniel soon became regulars in the forest as well as venturing down to the trails of the Whakarewarewa Forest.
It was soon evident that Rotorua was MTB Mecca. The business moved lock, stock and barrel to Rotorua in October 2015. A custom work shop was built in the basement of the new home and the business quickly evolved into a hub of Mtb activity. In 2017 the business was appointed as local agents for the Iconic Canadian MTB brand – Rocky Mountain and NZ distributor for Push shocks out of the USA.
In 2021 Suspension Tech expanded its activities into the manufacture of 10 Pre Production Coil Shocks made by a local CNC machinist based out of Taupo. These test shocks were put out to the market where they have racked up hundreds of hours of torturous abuse at the hands of skilled semi professional racers to everyday trail riders. Local ace Connor Hamilton raced to outright wins in the 2023 & 2024 and 2w Enduro series plus success in ERD International competition with a Pre-Production shock. The lessons learned have been implemented into the new ST 29 A kit shock which is now in full production.
Son Daniel’s input has been vital to the growth of the business. As he honed his skills on the local trails he also became the lead technician in Suspension Tech’s service and tuning operation.
His race craft has made huge leaps as he progressed up the results in the local Enduro race scene. Finishing 3rd overall in the 2024 2W Enduro Series and 2nd in the 2025 season. He took the win on the debut of the new ST 29 A coil shock at NZ’s oldest Enduro race the “Triple Crown Enduro”. His smooth and fluid riding style is accentuated by his immaculate race bike prep and suspension set up skills.
Dan has also become an integral part of the NZ MTB academy which is focused on progressing young MTB talent into world class athletes. Dan skills are utilized to teach these young racers the intricacies of suspension balance and set up.
We’re not just another tech company. At Suspension Tech, we’re riders too, which means we understand the difference great suspension makes on the trail. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a competitive racer, our goal is the same: to help you ride better and feel confident on any terrain. Every suspension we service or build is treated like it’s our own.
Our approach combines cutting-edge technology with old-school craftsmanship.
And as a small, family-run business, we’re committed to giving you the kind of one-on-one attention you won’t find elsewhere.
Part of our commitment to the mtb community is our trail adopter advocacy. We are currently the adopter of 2 of our favourite trails in the forest -Tūkonohi and the newly reopened Pest Control – formally Old Whaki. Both Rob Mezt built OG trails.
You will often find Norm and Dan working on the trails. Clearing weeds, opening up drainage channels, fixing sections of trail.
We eat, sleep and breathe Mtb culture.
