frequently Asked Questions

Will a coil shock work on my bike?

We recommend you consult with the manufacturer and see if they recommend a coil. This is often addressed in FAQ on the bike manufacturer web site.  It’s important to note that coil shocks tend to be more linear while air shocks provide a more progressive ramp up, so some bikes that don’t have much progression in the linkage don’t work well with coil shocks as you can bottom out too easily. So before you decide to get a coil shock, make sure it will work with your bike’s suspension design.

The two most important terms are clearance and dimensions.  Make sure the shock has clearance and does not contact the frame or link.  We typically do a dry shock check – running the shock through its full stroke and in all flip chip positions to check frame and linkage clearance.

Also very important is  the eye-to-eye measurement and stroke. Eye-to-eye refers to the total length of your shock when measured from the centre of each mounting bolt hole, also known as the eyelet (hence, “eye” to eye).  Stroke is how much shaft travel does the shock have. Its important to match shock length and stroke.

If we have the bike in house we are able to check clearance on “over stroked shocks” – i.e. manufacturer calls for 62.5 stroke shock but owner wants to run a 65 mm stroke shock and have more rear wheel travel.

Many manufacturers do not get full stroke out of their shocks. We often find shocks reported as 65 stroke with only 61mm stroke. They rate the bump rubbers as zero solid height when full bottomed. Most bump rubbers when compressed fully have a solid height of 3-4 mm.  We allow for the solid height of the bump rubber in our ST 29A stroke calculations.

The ST 29A kit shock uses std Fox or Rockshox compatible hardware. The hardware from the std Fox or Rockshox shock can be removed and installed in the ST 29A. The end eye is 15mm Inside Diameter. The Trunnion cylinder head uses the std Trunnion bolts from the std shock set up. We recommend sparing use of blue Loctite on the Trunnion bolts. – 2 drops max.

No – The ST 29 A uses the Sprindex Coil system. While other 36 mm ID  shock springs can fit – Rock Shox, EXT and Super Alloy racing. They will fit as well as the Sprindex. This can result in a lack of clearance to the body of the shock or imprecise fit on the Lower Spring Retaining Collar and Preload Adjuster. The Sprindex is also slightly progressive which suits how we set up the damping on compression and rebound.  We therefore do not deliver shocks without the correct Sprindex coil.  Warranty is void if running another manufacturers coil.

Yes in fact we encourage you to keep this shock for as many years as possible and swap it from Bike to Bike.  We can change eye to eye length and stroke. We can easily retune to suit the new application and install any Upgrades as they become available.  Plus we can change the cylinder head so you can go from Eyelet mount to Trunnion or Trunnion to Eyelet mount if required.  For shocks that require extensive parts change out to fit the new application it might be more feasible to trade in the old shock for a new one.

Yes in some instances we are able to take your older ST 29 as part payment towards a new ST 29.  We also do upgrades taking older spec shocks and fitting upgrades as they become available.

Please fill out the order request form so we have all the information we need when custom building your shock.

Regular service is always the best method to keep the performance of your ST 29 at its optimum level. Even the best racing shock fluid that we use will break down over time as its subjected to heat and shearing forces. All shocks are dyno tested before delivery and the dyno file archived for future reference.  On receiving a shock for service we perform a pre service dyno test to check function. The results of this test will determine if a major or minor service is required.

.

A typical service will run $38 for parts and $180 labour, oil and gas + gst

We recommend 6 monthly service for shocks on Expert/pro level riders/racers or very dusty or muddy conditions. Typical service interval is 1 year or 150-200 hours whichever comes first.

We do not supply service kits for home installation. We also have not yet produced service tools so all shocks must be  returned to Suspension Tech for service. Part of our service regime is Dyno testing, Vacuum bleeding and dyno verification so not something that can be done at home or with a range of special tools. All ST 29A Shocks receive priority same week service.

The ST 29A is covered by a 2 year limited liability warranty covering materials and manufacture. Normal service or service required after harsh or extensive use are not covered by warranty.

Yes we offer demo shocks to serious buyers.  This is only possible if we have already checked the bike for fitting and clearance issues.  Because each shock is custom built and tuned we have a charge for demo shocks of $150 plus freight + gst.  This is refunded if you choose to purchase the shock.  The shock must be returned in good condition (undamaged) the week after the test. Typically we will get the shock built and sent so you have the weekend to test the shock.  Subject to availability and time constraints.
